About Advising

New students to Southern State are strongly encouraged to meet with the Director of Admissions prior to scheduling classes.  Following that initial advising appointment, students are then directed to an an advisor in his/her anticipated career area.  Students are responsible for making their own appointments while SSCC faculty and staff can assist in directing the student to the appropriate contact person.  It is recommended that students schedule advising appointments in advance of registration opening dates to secure optimum course selection.

Ideally a student is paired with a faculty member with a specific area of expertise.  For example, some faculty members are specialists in advising students who intend on transferring to a particular four-year university, while others are specialists in specific career fields such as nursing, engineering, education, and so forth.  Regardless, faculty advisors should approve course selection for each academic quarter.
