Human and Social Services:  Chemical Dependency Major

 Students completing the Chemical Dependency program at Southern State Community College will  

  • Apply successfully for Social Work Assistant certification from the Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board.
  • Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with others.
  • Recognize personal issues, beliefs, and values which may influence motivation for entering the helping professions, or may affect client/helper relationships.
  • Demonstrate ability to fulfill individual learning objectives of the practicum experience, established collaboratively by the student, instructor, and practicum site supervisor.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of the basic concepts of generalist human services practice in a variety of social service settings.
  • Explain and understand the concept of "legal scope of practice" for mental health professions as determined by Ohio State law.
  • Use fundamental counseling skills (including active listening, clarification, reflection, summarizing, paraphrasing, and non-verbal responses) in helping relationships.
  • Assess clients' needs holistically and assist with planning to facilitate growth and change in individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to accurately gather information through intake interviews and mental status exams.
  • Explain the major concepts and specific techniques associated with selected major counseling theoretical perspectives.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of family and group dynamics and the ability to use basic facilitative skills in the group setting.
  • Use case management skills, including documentation and record keeping skills and ability to make appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrate short-term interventions and problem solving techniques to help individuals and groups deescalate crisis situation and develop appropriate coping techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to adhere to professional and ethical standards and demonstrate familiarity with ethical codes.
  • Demonstrate awareness of, sensitivity to, and respect for cultural ethnic and life-style diversity.
  • Recognize the differences in help-seeking behaviors among racial, ethnic, cultural, and other diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate customer service orientation, flexibility, and ability to work collaboratively
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate and read original source material, including discerning the author's main points and thinking critically about them.
  • Write and speak clearly in a variety of contexts and formats.
  • Demonstrate basic working knowledge of the operation and application of personal computers.
