Core Level Student Learning Outcomes

Core level learning outcomes encompass the learning outcomes that are expected of all graduates of Southern State Community College.  Some colleges may refer to these outcomes as general education outcomes.

 Communicate:

        1.       Read a document and demonstrate an understanding of its written, quantitative and graphical content.
2.      
Employ active listening techniques, including summarizing, paraphrasing,      questioning and nonverbal response.
3.      
Write a clear, well-organized paper using documentation and quantitative        tools when appropriate.
4.      
Make a clear, well-organized verbal presentation.
5.      
Complete a collaborative task effectively working with at least two other individuals.

 Solve Problems:

       1.     Recognize and define a problem using one's knowledge of science, 
        technology, math, humanities and society.

2.      
Analyze a problem.
3.      
Use human and technological resources effectively to solve problems.
4.      
Consider alternative solutions or strategies.
5.      
Evaluate practical and ethical implications of solutions.
6.      
Formulate an implementation plan.
7.      
Establish criteria for determining degrees of success.

 Think Critically:

        1.      Examine issues by suspending and challenging assumptions.
2.      
Evaluate issues from various perspectives.
3.      
Collect, analyze and interpret information.

Draw conclusions.

 Understand Awareness of the Global Society and the Individual's Role in It:

       1.       Demonstrate the understanding that humanity by nature is diverse.
2.      
Demonstrate knowledge of the major cultural issues of a person's own culture as well as other cultures.
3.      
Recognize contributions of different cultures as well as one's own.
4.      
Appreciate of diverse creative/aesthetic expression and experiences.

 Engage in Life Management Skills:

        1.       Understanding of the necessity and value of life long learning.
2.      
Understanding of the process involved in gathering information to use in    self-directed learning.
3.      
Understand the role of ethics in life and work.
4.      
Clarify one's own value system.
5.      
Evaluate career paths and opportunities.

 Information Literacy:

        1.       Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the operation and application of personal computers.
2.      
Ability to use the internet to conduct research.
3.      
Use databases related to one's academic major or career.
4.      
Use a variety of print and electronic information resources appropriately.
5.      
Adapt to new technology.
