Practical Nursing Certificate

 Students completing the Practical Nursing certificate program at Southern State Community College will  

  • Apply basic knowledge related to the Health Continuum from the biological, behavioral and nursing sciences in the practice of selected nursing skills that are within the scope of practice of the LPN.
  • Identify the basic human needs of patients through observation, while respecting the dignity and rights of the individual.
  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the nursing process of data collection, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care required for patients in a diversity of health care settings.
  • Use good communication skills in interactions with patients, families, and other members of the health care team and use appropriate documentation.
  • Administer prescribed medications accurately in techniques of dosage, administration, recording and nursing care responsibilities as appropriate for the LPN.
  • Use active learning techniques identified within the curriculum to promote a personal knowledge of the need for nurses to continue life-long learning.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical responsibility and the legal parameters of practice for the Practical Nurse as established by the Ohio Board of Nursing and enacted in the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Accept the responsibility to be accountable for personal nursing practice acting as an advocate for patients, nurses, and the profession of nursing.
  • Eligible to sit for the licensure exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
