PRACTICAL NURSING - 432
Certificate Program
Total Credits: 65

Program Design: The Practical Nursing program is a four-quarter certificate program combining lecture classes, lab practice, and clinical experience designed to prepare the graduate to be eligible to complete the licensure examination (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. There are three pre-requisite courses of BIOL 205 and BIOL 206 and high school algebra (or MATH 117). Students may complete the non-nursing courses of the required curriculum (CSCI 101, ENGL 101, BIOL 207, PSYC 111) prior to entering the Practical Nursing Program if desired. The nursing courses are available on the Central Campus with the sequence beginning in the Spring Quarter and on the South Campus with the sequence beginning in the Fall Quarter. Continuation in the Practical Nursing Program requires a grade of C or above in all courses listed in the program outline.

Application Process:
1) Complete the Southern State Application for Admission and the Self Directed Placement Assessment.
2) Complete the Practical Nursing Program application (yellow form).                            3) Provide an official high school transcript to the Nursing Department verifying graduation date or GED documentation to the Nursing Office.
4) Successful completion of BIOL 205, BIOL 206, and high school algebra or MATH 117 or higher level with a grade of C or higher.                                                                      5) Copies of transcripts from any school of higher learning previously attended must be received in the Nursing Office. Student may request copy from SSCC Student Records office.
6) Achieve satisfactory scores required by the Pre-Entrance Nursing Test (Assessment Technologies Inc. TEAS test) or ACT Assessment. http://www.sscc.edu/academics/Nursing_testing.htm                                                   7) After completing criteria 1-6, participate in an interview with the Director of the Nursing Department or designee to discuss the requirements and objectives of the Practical Nursing Program. At this time, your name will be placed on the admission wait list according to the date and time admission requirements were completed.                        8) Document a cumulative college GPA of 2.50 or greater in all SSCC coursework before entering PRAC 101.                                                                                                  9) After acceptance, but prior to assigned dates, the accepted student must: complete the Physical Examination Record (form provided by Nursing Department), purchase liability insurance via SSCC and maintain throughout program, purchase required uniform, register for classes required and pay fees according to general college policies, maintain current CPR certification (Healthcare provider or Professional Rescuer level) and TB screening throughout program, and complete a fingerprinting and background check per SSCC Health Sciences policy.                                                                                 10) It is important for the Nursing student to be aware that any prerequisite courses are listed in the college catalog for each course in the curriculum and must be carefully followed. A prospective Nursing Student needs to be aware that fingerprinting and background checks will be conducted. Students must be cleared before they may participate in clinical experiences. This policy is based on the Ohio Revised Code, Section 4723.28. A past felony or misdemeanor conviction may be a disqualifying factor. Students with disabilities requiring specific reasonable accommodations should contact the Disabilities Services Office for case assessment at the time of application.

The complete Practical Nursing Admission Policy is available in the Nursing Office.
