What is Information Literacy?
If someone is illiterate, he/she may be unable to read or have
difficulty with reading. If someone is described as information
illiterate, he/she may be unable to find information or decipher
what that information means once it is found. Information illiteracy
is not a reflection of someone's intelligence or capability to
learn. Information
illiteracy is merely caused by a lack of experience using print
and/or non-print information sources that require some sort of
technology, and can be easily overcome with a little patience,
kindness, and training.
When we venture into the World Wide Web, we are bombarded by
information that can be intimidating to even an expert web
navigator. We must constantly try to keep pace with changes in our
technology and the methods we use to find information. Our ability
to cope with changes in technology and the Internet is a reflection
of our level of information literacy.
In the LRC, we take pride in our efforts to increase the level of
information literacy amongst our students, faculty and staff. Here,
we provide you with a treasure trove of tutorials and other helpful
information designed to help you use our resources more effectively.
