SSCC Men’s Basketball Team Prevails

The Southern State Community College men’s basketball team traveled to Celina Ohio on Wed., Nov. 10 to take on Wright State Lake (WSL).  The Patriots played hard and came out victorious with a final score of 81-66.

The Patriots trailed only once by a score of 2-0, but soon jumped out on top and kept the lead the entire game. “Once again, we played well offensively but defensively we still have a lot of work to do. We’ve told our players all year that we can score, but being the best defensive team on the floor every night is a must,” stated SSCC Head Basketball Coach Jason Moberly. The Patriots kept pounding the basketball into Anthony Beverly, which resulted in a lot of open shot opportunities. “We are very fortunate to have Anthony. He’s such a big force for us in the post. Every team we have previously played remembers Anthony,” continued Moberly. At halftime, the Patriots headed into the locker room with a 45-40 lead.

At the beginning of the second half, the Patriots picked right up where they left off. They increased their lead and didn’t look back. “I was very happy with the way we played offensively. Our bench was the difference in the game tonight. Ted Clemans picked up some early fouls and had to sit most of the second half, but Bryce Raney, Sean Inman, Kyle Stoops, Trevor Gould, and Charlie Breckenridge came off the bench and contributed in big ways,” Moberly said.  The Patriots’ defense picked up a little in the second half and held WSL to 26 points. “We went into halftime and talked about how we needed to play better defense and we challenged our players to hold them at 67 for the game. We have a week to work on things defensively and tune up our offense before we play again. We have to take advantage of the time we have because we will be facing a tough schedule from here on out.”

The stats for each player are as follows:  Dexter Jones, 1/0/0-0/2; Anthony Beverly, 8/0/1-1/17; Charles Breckenridge, 1/1/1-1/6; Ted Clemons, 2/2/0-0/10; Trevor Gould, 2/0/0-0/4; Sean Inman, 2/0/0-0/4; Mike King, 7/1/1-2/18; Bryce Raney, 2/1/0-0/7; Kyle Stoops, 1/0/0-0/2; and Erik Marting, 2/2/1-2/11.

The Patriots’ next game will be on Wed., Nov. 17at Sinclair with their first home game of the season following on Sat., Nov. 20 against Clark State Community College. This game will be held at the Highland County YMCA with a game time of 7:00 p.m.
