Southern State Volleyball Wrap Up

HILLSBORO – Southern State Patriot volleyball concluded another successful season with a 13-9 record, including a fourth place finish at the Taylor University Invitational Tournament earlier in the season.

“I think this team improved as much during the season as any team we’ve ever had here,” said SSCC coach Ken Holliday. “Two things that point to this were our ability to beat three teams that defeated us earlier in the season and winning seven of our last ten matches.”

Several sophomore players concluded outstanding careers. April Armstrong finished her career with 341 kills and 466 digs, good for ninth and sixth place in SSCC history. Brandy Koehler had 554 career digs, fifth all time. Jennifer Roman served 83 career aces, which is sixth most on the all-time list. Despite playing only one season, Beth Richards finished her career sixth on the all-time set assists list with 556. Nicole Garneau had 363 digs, 11^th all time, and Megan Boone served 67 aces, 12^th all time.

“This has been a great group of players for Southern State,” said Holliday. “The last two seasons, we’ve won 41 matches, and they’ve played a huge role in that.”

The Patriots will begin a huge rebuilding job. Only two players from this year’s team were listed as freshman: Ashley Wesley, who did an outstanding job (third on the team in digs and second on aces) playing her first competitive volleyball season and Brittany Grooms, the team’s only true freshman.

“We’ve got a good deal of work to do,” said Holliday. “But having the new Patriot Center should be a big help with recruiting.”
