Southern State Community College to Host Area Artist Exhibition

Southern State Community College is pleased to announce that an Area Artist Exhibition will be held in the Appalachian Gateway Center to promote the works of local artists and their organizations. Scheduled for April 14 through May 24 at the south campus in Fincastle, this event provides an opportunity for not only local artists to have their work exhibited but also for the public to discover the rich artistic talent that is unique to southern Ohio.

James D. Werline, a well-known artist and SSCC instructor, and Tammy Wells will be coordinating the event. Werline commented, “This exhibition is an ideal opportunity for local artists to have their work noticed. It also provides the public a chance to meet each artist and discuss their work as several local art organizations have committed to this year’s event.”

This year’s exhibition will feature two-dimensional painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, short films, three-dimensional, pottery, jewelry, and woodcraft.

The general public is welcome and encouraged to view the exhibition from 12 noon until 9 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 12 noon until 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays between April 14 and May 24 at the south campus. The gallery schedule is subject to change due to meeting activities scheduled in the Center. Patrons are encouraged to call the College for daily updates to the viewing schedule.

The opening artists’ reception will take place on Thurs., April 24, beginning at 6 p.m. with artists being introduced at 7 p.m. The viewing schedule for short films will begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 110. During the reception participants and guests will have the opportunity to meet and converse with each other.

Established in 1999, the Appalachian Gateway Center serves as a cultural resource center for the Appalachian region of Southern Ohio.  Located at the south campus of Southern State Community College, the Center is a regional gathering place for students, artists, organizations, and community members.  The Center actively assists in the promotion and preservation of regional resources: human, natural, and cultural, in order to support economic development of the area.

“Maggie,” an oil painting by local artist Carol Ware, is one of the works that will be featured in the 2008 Area Artist Exhibition at SSCC’s Appalachian Gateway Center from April 14 – May 24.
