SSCC Soccer: Patriots defeat Clark State 5-1
Southern State gets goals from five different players
The Southern State Community College
men’s soccer team introduced newcomer Clark State Community
College to conference soccer competition by blasting them 5-1.
This marks the first year for soccer
at Clark State, but the 19th season for the sport at
Southern State. Both schools are members of the Ohio Collegiate
Athletic Conference (OCAC).
“It was a great victory for our
program and this extends our winning streak against conference
opponents to nine in a row,” said Josh Thoroman, SSCC head
coach.
The scoring got under way just three
minutes into the game when sophomore forward Tyler Jimison
(North Adams H.S.) was hauled down in the penalty box. Sophomore
Nathan Rollyson (Wilmington H.S.) stepped up and buried the
penalty kick.
Seven minutes later, SSCC sophomore
defender Chase Burns (North Adams H.S.) found Jimison on the run
and Jimison converted his shot to put the Southern State
Patriots up 2-0.
Sophomore midfielder Jordan England
(Ripley H.S.) scored the third goal for the Patriots on an
assist from Jimison. Burns recorded the fourth goal on an assist
from sophomore Caleb Conn (Miami Trace H.S.).
Trailing 4-0, Clark State was able
to post one score before Conn scored the Patriots’ fifth and
final goal of the game.
Conn, who typically plays goalkeeper
for the Patriots, injured a finger in the team’s first game of
the season. He was moved to midfield where the Southern State
coaching staff hoped to capitalize on his athleticism. Their
theory held true, as Conn was able to receive the ball, elude
the last defender, and then place his shot past the Clark State
goalkeeper.
“Today was what Southern State
soccer is all about,” said Sean Sweeney, SSCC assistant coach.
“We are all about the team. The five goals from five different
players were done by design and it makes this win all that much
more special!”
The SSCC Patriots are the defending
OCAC conference champions.
