ENGL 0098 | Preparation I for College Composition
Prerequisite: Entry to this course is made by SSCC placement procedures only.

This course focuses on writing effective paragraphs with emphasis on sentence grammar and basic grammar review. Students will be taught the concept of writing as a process and practice writing in various contexts. Instruction on improving reading comprehension skills will be provided. Students will receive collge credit for this course; however, this course may not be applied toward a degree or certificate. A grade of C or above and successful completion of an exit exam is required to pass this course.
ENGL 0099 | Preparation II for College Composition
Prerequisite: ENGL 0098 or college placement scores
3 credits
This course focuses on writing multi-paragraph assignments and essays. A grammar review with emphasis on mechanics and punctuation will be provided. Students will continue to practice the concept of writing as a process and writing in various contexts. Students will study the elements of essays including thesis statements, sentence clarity, effective transitions, and paragraph development and cohesiveness. Instruction and practice on critical reading strategies will also be provided. Students will receive college credit for this couse; however, this course may not be applied as credit towards a degree. A grade of C or above and successful completion of an exit exam is required to advance to ENGL 1101 - English Composition I.
ENGL 1100 | Preparation for College Composition
3 credits
This course prepares students for college composition by offering a basic introduction to the various aspects of writing and developmental reading comprehension. This introduction includes a thorough review in rules of basic grammar, sentence grammar, punctuation, and usage. Coursework presents writing as a process and provides instruction and practice in prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing strategies. This course may not be used to satisfy English requirements in any program, but may be used to satisfy elective requirements.
ENGL 1101 | English Composition I
Prerequisites: One of the following:
1) Accuplacer Writing score of 5 or above
2) ACT English score of 18 or above
3) SAT Verbal score of 500 or above
4) Successful completion of ENGL 0099

This course provides an introduction to expository writing, emphasizing the clear and concise expression of ideas in a variety of rhetorical modes.
ENGL 1102 | English Composition II
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101
3 credits
This course advances skills acquired in English 1101, continuing to engage students in the clear and concise expression of ideas while emphasizing argumentation and research writing. MLA documentation is required.
ENGL 1199 | Seminar
1-6 credits
This course will be a discussion of particular problems related to the student’s chosen program and areas of interest.
ENGL 2135 | Young Adult Literature
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101, EDUC 1102, or permission of instructor

Students will learn what constitutes quality young adult literature and will be introduced to a wide range of young adult novels and authors. Students will examine young adult literature through a literary context.
ENGL 2201 | Introduction to Literature
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101

This course offers an introduction to the three major literary genres: fiction, poetry, and drama. Students will read short stories, poems, and plays to gain an understanding of literary forms and to learn techniques for analyzing and interpreting works of literature. An emphasis will also be placed on how literature explores and lends insight into the human experience.
ENGL 2205 | Technical Report Writing
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101

This course introduces students to the discipline of technical communication. Preparation of visuals to supplement text, descriptions of mechanisms, explanations of processes, and writing reports are the major topics included. This course is designed for students enrolled in technical degree programs and does not fulfill a humanities requirement.
ENGL 2206 | Introduction to Journalism
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101 or permission of instructor

Introduction to Journalism is a course designed to introduce students to the basic processes of news writing and reporting. The course will acquaint students with newsroom operations, reporting, writing, editing, and Associated Press style guidelines for both print and electronic media.

This is a survey course that examines representative works of literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late 18th century. A variety of authors, genres, and trends will be studied.

This course is an introduction to creative writing, focusing on both fiction and poetry. Discussions of fiction writing will emphasize (1) the technical elements of fiction, (2) assigned readings, and (3) works written by class members. This course explores major works in American literature through the mid-19th century. Readings are drawn from the Puritan Age, Colonial Period, Romantic Age, and the Age of Realism.

ENGL 2240 | Introduction to Films

This course focuses on the art and history of film, with particular attention given to the study of cinematic adaption of works of literary art. The course introduces students to basic film and literary techniques, terminologies, genres, and traditions. Students will ready literary works, view film adaptations of literary works, and engage in critical and artistic analysis of both forms of art.
ENGL 2246 | Classical & World Mythology
Prerequisites: ENGL 1101

This course is a survey of classical and world mythology that examines popular works from ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Celtic, Nordic, and Eastern cultures. The primary focus of this course is reading and discussing myths, which will allow students to understand the literary value, historical significance, and ongoing influence of classical and world mythology. In addition to readings and discussions, students will write two research papers and give two presentations that demonstrate their ability to explain the influence of specific works both verbally and in writing.
