NURSING - 430
Associate of Applied Science Degree
Total Credits: 105
Nature of the Profession: Registered nurses (RNs) care for the sick and help people stay healthy. They observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. Other duties may include administering medication, assisting in convalescence and rehabilitation, instructing patients and their families in proper care, and helping individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health.
Program Design: The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing and has full approval of the Ohio Board of Nursing. The program is designed to be completed in seven quarters when taken on a full-time basis. Admission to the Nursing courses requires written acceptance by the
Department of Nursing according to the admission requirements listed on the special nursing application. Students may elect to complete some or all of the general education course requirements prior to being admitted into the nursing courses. Continuation in the Nursing Program requires a grade of C or above in all courses
listed in the program outline. The cumulative grade point average must be at least a C. There is a time limit on completion of science and nursing course requirements.
Application Process:
1) Complete the Southern State Application for Admission and the
Self Directed Placement Assessment.
2) Complete the Associate Degree Nursing Program application (blue
form).
3) Provide an official transcript verifying graduation from an approved high school or copy of GED showing scores received.
The high school transcript is also used to provide documentation of
completion of high school biology, high school chemistry, and high
school algebra, achieving at least a grade of C. (If these courses
were taken longer than five years ago, updating knowledge is
strongly recommended.) NOTE: BIOL 101, 104, or 205, CHEM 120 and 122
or higher, and
MATH 117 or higher may be taken at Southern State to meet this requirement. A
grade of C or higher is required in these courses.
4) Copies of transcripts from any
school of higher learning previously attended must be received in
the Nursing Office.
5) Achieve satisfactory scores required by the Pre-entrance Nursing
Test (Assessment Technologies Inc. TEAS test) or ACT Assessment.
Click here for information on the
Pre-entrance Nursing Test.
6) After completing criteria 1-5, participate in an interview with
the Director of the Nursing Department or designee to discuss the
requirements and objectives of the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
At this time, your name will be placed on the admission wait list
according to the date and time admission requirements were
completed.
7) Completion of BIOL 205, Anatomy & Physiology I prior
to entering NRSG 101, with a grade of C or higher.
8) Document a cumulative college GPA of 2.50 or greater in all coursework prior to entering NRSG 101.
9) After acceptance, and before entering clinical experience,
provide a completed medical examination form an immunization record
indicating that the applicant has the physical and emotional stamina
to pursue a career in nursing. Requests for reasonable
accommodations necessary for a student because of disability must be
made in writing to the Director of the Program at least 6 months
before the Nursing Program begins. Current CPR certification, the
purchase of student liability insurance, background check, and
student uniform are also required.
10) It is important for a perspective nursing student to know that a
past felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify him/her from
taking a licensure examination: NCLEX-RN (as outlined in Section
4723.28 of the Ohio Revised Code).
