PRACTICAL NURSING - 432
Certificate Program
Total Credits: 65
Program Design: The Practical Nursing program is a four-quarter certificate program combining lecture classes, lab practice, and clinical experience designed to prepare the graduate to be eligible to complete the licensure examination (NCLEX-PN)
to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. There are three pre-requisite courses of BIOL 205 and BIOL 206
and high school algebra (or MATH 117). Students may complete the non-nursing courses of the required curriculum (CSCI 101, ENGL 101, BIOL
207, PSYC 111) prior to entering the Practical Nursing Program if desired. The nursing courses are available
on the Central Campus with the sequence beginning in the Spring Quarter
and on the South Campus with the sequence beginning in the Fall
Quarter. Continuation in the Practical Nursing Program requires a
grade of C or above in all courses listed in the program outline.
Application Process:
1) Complete the Southern State Application for Admission and the
Self Directed
Placement Assessment.
2) Complete the Practical Nursing Program application (yellow form).
3) Submit a transcript verifying graduation from high school or a copy of GED.
4) Successful completion of BIOL 205 and BIOL 206 with a grade of C
or higher.
5) Successful completion of high school algebra (or MATH 117) with a
grade of C or higher.
6) Achieve satisfactory scores required by the Pre-Entrance Nursing
Test (Assessment Technologies Inc. TEAS test) or ACT Assessment.
7) After completing criteria 1-6, participate in an interview with
the Director of the Nursing Department or designee to discuss the
requirements and objectives of the Practical Nursing Program. At this
time, your name will be placed on the admission wait list according
to the date and time admission requirements were completed.
8) Document a cumulative college GPA of 2.00 or greater in all SSCC
coursework before entering PRAC 101.
9) After acceptance, and before entering clinical experience,
provide a completed medical examination form and immunization record
indicating that the applicant has the physical and emotional stamina
to pursue a career in nursing. Requests for reasonable
accommodations necessary for a student because of disability must be
made in writing to the Director of the Program at least 6 months
before the Nursing Program begins. Current CPR certification, the
purchase of student liability insurance, background check and
student uniform are also required.
10) It is important for a prospective student to know that a history
of felony or misdemeanor may disqualify the student from taking the Licensure Examination
(NCLEX-PN) (as outlined in Section 4723.28 of the Ohio Revised Code).
