If you are a high school student interested in obtaining college credits before graduation, the Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) program might be for you.
Please note that some academic programs at Southern State require high school graduation or completion of the GED and may exclude entrance under the PSEO. In most cases, though, admission is based on the high school grade of the applicant.
To qualify, students must:
- complete the PSEO application and submit it to the Records Office;
- provide official high school transcripts that reflect the required cumulative grade point average (on a 4. scale) for the following grade levels: 3.75 freshmen, 3.50 sophomores, 3.0 juniors and seniors;
- junior and senior students must provide documentation that all parts of the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) have been successfully passed, freshman and sophomore students will have their OGT scores reviewed at the end of their sophomore year (students must have successfully completed all parts of the OGT to continue in the PSEO Program if this is required for graduation by their school district);
- meet one of the following criteria:
- reflect a level of personal and social maturity which would make it possible for the student to adapt to a college level environment.
All PSEO applicants will receive notification of acceptance or denial in writing.
- Fall Semester 2013 — June 1, 2013
- Spring Semester 2014 — November 1, 2013
Other PSEO Guidelines
Students enrolling in the program will be expected and required to perform at the same level as all regular students. Post Secondary students are subject to the same policies and procedures, academic practices and grading standards as all other Southern State students.
Students who do not complete a course (fail, withdraw or receive any non-completion grade) will be required to reimburse their school district the cost of the course that was not completed.
Students will be responsible for the payment of any course that they attempt to repeat that has already been passed successfully. Students may repeat a course that was previously failed or withdrawn from.
Students may not enroll in any specific college course through the PSEO program if the student has taken high school courses in the same subject area as the college course and has failed to attain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent in such completed high school courses. It is the student’s responsibility not to register for courses in which this guideline has not been met.
Parents of students under 18 years of age need to be aware that all Southern State computers have free, unfettered access to the internet. Southern State computers do not use any type of filtering software.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) applies to education records at all levels of education. At the point of becoming a Southern State student, FERPA rights become those of the student. Without written consent from the student, a dependent student’s information cannot be disclosed even to the parent. However, under the rules of Post Secondary Enrollment Option, the college reserves the right to communicate student record information with appropriate official(s) of the home high school. Information will not be released to parents without signed authorization from the student.
Students should see an academic advisor prior to registration each semester.
Students are permitted to participate in the PSEO program during the fall and spring semesters.
The state of Ohio requires any male student between the ages of 18 and 26 to be registered with Selective Service to be eligible for in-state residency (for tuition purposes) at Ohio public colleges and universities. Male students who turn 18 while taking classes as a PSEO student must register immediately for Selective Service or their residency status will be changed to out-of-state and they will be responsible for the additional out-of-state charges.
