Also present: Rosemary Poston, Jon Davidson

The orientation and hiring process for adjuncts was discussed. Rosemary described the employment packet which Mary Clinton  provides. She also described the process for orientation of  new adjuncts.

Dr. Cronan described the orientation course for adjunct faculty which the Professional Development Committee of SOCHE is developing, and he asked any coordinator willing to participate. The importance of providing an accurate course outline to each adjunct was discussed, as were various ways to provide for mentoring of adjuncts.

Ways to recognize adjunct faculty as well as to recognize the service and accomplishments of  full-time faculty, administration, and staff were discussed. Everyone agreed that service pins, a recognition ceremony, and tokens, which increase in value with length of service were valuable. Basing service years on quarter hours taught rather than calendar years for adjunct faculty was discussed as a more appropriate way to count service.

Dr. Cronan announced that the winter schedules are out, and Dr. Shrubb distributed copies of  winter schedule, with staffing to date indicated. The use of last winter’s schedule and of this fall’s schedule as a guide in selecting adjunct faculty was discussed. All recommendations for adjunct faculty staffing should go through the discipline cluster coordinator to the appropriate dean. However, the actual letter hiring the adjunct might not be sent until after the quarter starts. In only very rare circumstances

Would a recommendation from the coordinator be rejected, so the adjunct need not wait for the letter to complete paperwork and begin to prepare.

Dr. Cronan stressed the importance of explaining to all new adjuncts that we must receive official transcripts from every college and university the adjunct has attended, and of explaining to them that they would have to request that the transcript be sent to us.

The budgeting process and forms were discussed.
