ACADEMIC COUNCIL
November 29, 2001
Present: K. Newby, S. Stout,M.Snyder,M.McCarren,R. Shrubb, E. Cronan(presiding)
The Council met at North, regaled with quite adequate refreshments, though not up there with a complete turkey dinner, at 2p.m.The following topics were discussed and the actions taken:
Sherry Stout distributed and discussed a revised bomb threat procedure she and Karen had developed. Everyone was pleased with the revision. The entire crisis management document is being revised by Sherry, Karen, and Ric.
Sherry also reported on emergency contacts at each campus at night. Mr. Buck suggested that pagers be available for all the evening personnel . Dr. Cronan will follow up on this with Mr. Buck.
Telephone tree for each campus was discussed. Dr. Cronan will have the college tree out next week.
Sherry will work on a possible change of the registration form to allow a student to waive advising in some cases.
The placement testing pilot study of COMPASS being done by Bill Worpenberg was discussed.
Michele expressed concern about faculty members’ having to sign an assurance that they will not misuse student information in order to get access to student records on the computer. She asked if administrators had to sign such an assurance.
Neither Dr. Cronan nor Sherry knew past practice. The current form was suggested by Sharon Purvis as a way for the College to comply with the Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Everyone agreed that all persons having access to student records should have to sign an assurance if the faculty did. Dr. Cronan wants a less “threatening” statement, and he will follow up with Sharon Purvis on this point.
Dr. Cronan reported that the Program Review Committee had agreed to accept the charge of assisting individuals who are developing program proposals. They also may review program reviews but will not make recommendations concerning program continuation.
The meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
