ACADEMIC COUNCIL
Present: Sherry Stout, Karen Newby, Marsha Snyder, Rosemary Poston, Ken Storer (for Don Storer), Jon Davidson, Jeff Montgomery, Dr. Cronan (presiding)
Also present: Ken Shull
An alternative summer, 2004 schedule was distributed by Ken Shull. It was discussed at length, with the conclusion that not all of the courses he has proposed should be added to the summer schedule but that some of them should. Ken agreed to accept input from the group until March 12 before revising the draft schedule. Members of the Academic Council were asked to send any revisions they wanted to see specifically to Laura Shively for Ken Shull.
By March 20, Ken agreed to distribute a revised copy of the draft summer, 2004 schedule to the Academic Council.
Sherry Stout did a summary presentation on an article on teamwork, which emphasized three functions of a college president’s administrative team: utilitarian; cognitive; and expressive. The article was discussed briefly.
The cognitive function of a team was discussed at length in regard to the recommendations from the Academic Scheduling and Registration Improvement Team.
After much discussion, it was decided that the number of people on waitlists should not be limited. However, it was agreed that a standard way of letting people into these classes with waitlists be instituted.
Sherry Stout distributed a summary of a chapter from the book, The Learning Paradigm College by John Tagg. The ideas from the article were discussed at length, especially the levels I, II, and III of learning; level III is the only one which will function well in a learning college.
