ACADEMIC COUNCIL

September 26, 2003

Present:  Brian Siemers, Jon Davidson, Jeff Montgomery, Karen Newby, Ric Shrubb,                 Sherry Stout, Rosemary Poston, Dr. Cronan (presiding)

Dr. Cronan distributed the memoranda and the forms needed to make budget requests for next academic year. The forms were discussed, and Dr. Cronan distributed some samples to illustrate how the forms should be completed. There was some discussion of how the questions concerning budget increases related to learning and how the measurement of such learning would be handled.

Coordinators were asked to collect the data from faculty and to submit the request to the appropriate dean by November 3. Deans were asked to submit the data to Dr. Cronan by November 15.

The procuring of transcripts and resumes from adjunct faculty was discussed. The process is not standard, but generally, applications and resumes are sent to Dr. Cronan’s office. He then sends copies to the coordinators, after keeping one for the file. Transcripts are requested in the letter which goes to the adjunct faculty member. In some cases, however, the adjunct faculty member is identified and hired outside this process. In such cases, Dr. Cronan does not always get the transcript and resume. In some other cases, the adjunct faculty member ignores the request from the Academic Affairs Office. In such cases, usually the coordinator is asked to try to get these documents.

This process was discussed, and Dr. Cronan indicated he would check the records and check with other staff. He will report back to the coordinators. While opinion was divided among coordinators, some felt that the coordinator should not be spending time trying to get these credentials.

The frequency of meeting was discussed. It was agreed that the group would meet once per quarter, except for specially called meetings, for program reviews and for other specific issues. The next regularly-scheduled meeting will be Friday, February 27, at 1:00 p.m. at central campus.

               Respectfully submitted,

               Ernie Cronan
