Technology Plan/Goal for Next Year

Tabled

Other

  • Distance Learning link to college home page

Suggested by Cathy LaParl that we try to make the distance learning link more prominent on the college’s web page perhaps through a “quicklink” feature.  This idea has been proposed before and Annie agreed to talk with Josh to see what we would need to do to implement such a feature.

  • Increase Technology Fee

-        Need to have a reason to do so.

-        Should we have a person dedicated to administering WebCT?  Louis suggested that Clark State has a person such as this that would be willing to assist us for free.  Other members of the committee thought we should define the duties that we need and also define whether we are really talking about a WebCt coordinator or a distance learning coordinator.

-        Carol Callahan questioned that if we raised the fee, how would we be assured the money would be directed to technology.

-        Kristi offered that we should be charging for use of technology on campus.  Sherry indicated that we are currently doing that.

-        In regard to possibly charging more money for online “programs” Sharon offered that we need to be cognizant of financial aid implications.

  • Help Desk Presentation

-        Josh to update for the next meeting

-        Cathy Kelly reported on behalf of the Help Desk staff that during the first day of the quarter, the Help Desk received approximately 70 calls of which 90% had to do with WebCT.  In the following days, the calls dropped dramatically to 30-40 calls and then 10-20 calls.

-        In regard to the IT department having to spend so much time working with the data provided by administrative computing, Virginia mentioned that she had developed a program to alleviate the cumbersome task but that it was not currently being used.

  • Training Suggestions

-        Tips on enhancing power point presentations

-        WebCT

-        Outlook

-        Electronic Portfolios

-        “Turn it in”.com

-        Plagiarism and cheating

-        Carol Callahan requested a list of committee meeting dates and times. Also, a request was made to not offer all of the training during the week before classes start.

  • Computer Literacy Placement

-        An obvious need exists for students to demonstrate some sort of computer literacy prior to signing up for not only online classes but also traditionally delivered classes.

-        Sharon indicated that at the point of registration, we could have the students designate a time that they must sign up for an orientation course for online learners.

-        Many colleges require all students to take a computer literacy placement assessment.

-        We could look at adding this as a component to the placement test.

-        This topic has been assigned to the Policy Subcommittee.

  • LRC Server

-        Louis indicated that we will soon have to move to a graphical interface system which will entail an investment of $32,000.  We should consider this as we move forward with any planning.

  • WebCT Upgrade

-        Hold off until spring.
