English 102 Online
Hello. My name is Cathy LaParl, and I teach English 102 online.
If you are thinking about registering for this course, you need to carefully read through all information posted on the college's My Blackboard page.
Additionally, if you enroll in the course, you must --
- have a word processing program that allows you to create and download .doc or .rtf (rich text format) files.
- have Windows Media Player, Real Player, and Macromedia Flash Player.
- have better-than-average skills using your word processing program.
- log on to the course website on the first day of the quarter and begin working on Module 1.
- have the required textbooks in hand on the first day of the quarter. For a list of texts I use in my courses, click here.
- confirm that you have an LRC Patron Account that has been activated and is in good standing. To do this, contact the LRC at Central Campus.
If you have never taken an online course before – or even if you have – you are probably wondering just how it works. Let me share with you some basic information about what you can expect in this online version of English 102.
First of all, English 102 offers instruction in persuasive and research writing. In this course, you will learn --
- how to write effective arguments.
- how to conduct research in college libraries and on the world wide web.
- how to extract information from sources and effectively present it in your own writing.
- how to organize, draft, and revise a research paper.
- how to properly document sources according to MLA format.
You’ll learn all of this by –
- completing assigned readings
- participating in class discussions & activities
- taking quizzes
- completing research related assignments such as annotated bibliographies, notecards, and outlines.
- writing and revising rough drafts to produce polished, formal essays and papers.
Now that you know what you’ll be doing, you’ll want to know how you’ll be doing it.
First, it’s important that you budget an average of 12 (or more) hours a week for this course. Some of this time will be spent online, and some of it will be spent offline.
You’ll spend online time --
- obtaining course materials (assignments, handouts, assigned readings, etc.)
- taking quizzes
- participating in class discussions and activities
- submitting assignments
- checking for new announcements or e-mail
You are expected to log on to the course website five days a week.
You’ll spend offline time reading, studying, planning your participation in class discussions and activities, and, most of all, writing!
English 102 is divided into modules. The first module is an orientation designed to prepare you for your online experience. The second module focuses on conducting research using Southern State's LRC and OhioLINK. Modules that follow focus on specific essay and research paper assignments.
You’ll learn much more about the course once the quarter begins. For now, I hope the information provided here helps you make a decision as to whether or not this online version of English 102 is right for you.
