Qualities of a Successful Web Course Student

Successful web course students are highly motivated and committed to their studies. While web courses offer flexibility and convenience, they can be more demanding of time and energy than regular courses. Web course students need to:

  • Know how to use technology (e.g. email and web browers).
  • Login regularly to participate in class - at least 3 times per week. Some students login as much as twice a day.
  • Commit approximately 6 hours per week to a class.
  • Use good time management skills and exercise self-discipline to ensure enough time to study and complete all assignments.
  • Take notes as they study.
  • Enjoy communicating in writing and enjoy reading the writing of others.
  • Seek help when problems arise.
  • Be aware that good communication is an essential element of a Web course. Students must be willing to share thoughts, experiences, and ideas with a group and communicate with others using professional respect and courtesy.

Students must log on to the course the first day of the quarter and read the introduction. Students not logging on to the class site the first day of class will be dropped from the course. There will be an assignment the first day of class. There will be a final exam on campus proctored by the instructor. The time and date for the final exam will be set by the instructor, and students must attend; there will be no exceptions. Students must be highly motivated and will need to keep up with the weekly assignments and quizzes. Students must be somewhat computer literate to be able to function in this class and must be able to save files in .docx, .doc or .rtf formats, upload and download files, and navigate email on the course site, which may include attachment of files. Students MUST SHOW UP AT THE WILMINGTON CAMPUS ROOM 318 the first day of class. This is a hybrid course, which means we will meet occasionally online instead of in the classroom. A foot pedal is recommended but not required for this course; however, it does make the transcription easier to complete. There will be three quizzes, a final, transcription assignments, and two competencies required to finish this course. All assignments need to be finished the week they are due.
