ACCT 106: Gayle Mackay (gmackay@sscc.edu).

Students enrolling in this course --

  1. Must access the course the first day of the quarter and post their introduction in the Discussion Forum. This will be counted as attendance. Anyone not "present" the first week will be dropped.
  2. Should have Microsoft Word and Excel. Free access to these programs is available through a student's @LIVE.SSCC.EDU account.
  3. Should be able to upload and download documents, attach documents to e-mail, and use course e-mail efficiently.
Information below provides 1) textbook information and 2) the qualities of a successful web course student.

Textbook: Accounting (24th Ed); Warren, Reeve and Duchac; South-Western Publishing Co. -- Cengage Learning.

Important things to know about what you need to buy to pass this course:

  • CengageNOW is required for you to do your homework, and, therefore, required to pass this course. CengageNOW contains an eBook automatically, so you do have a less expensive option to buy CengageNOW by itself.
  • If you prefer to have a hard-copy of the textbook, it will almost always be less expensive to buy the bundle. CengageNOW, which is required, costs much less when bundled with a new book than it does should you buy a used book and CengageNOW separately.
With these things in mind, you have 2 locations to buy: 1) the campus bookstore or 2) www.cengagebrain.com.

1) Bookstore: Bundle -- For the hard-copy book + CengageNOW Access, the ISBN # is 0538785780.

2)Cengagebrain.com: CengageNOW access by itself (includes eBook), use this link: http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/isbn/978-1-111-30042-5. The eBook is the cheapest way to go by at least ½.

Qualities of a Successful Web Course Student

Successful web course students are highly motivated and committed to their studies. While web courses offer flexibility and convenience, they can be more demanding of time and energy than regular courses. Much of what is learned in a web course is self-taught, with direction, extra instructional material, topic clarification, and mentoring provided by the instructor. Web course students need to:

  • Know how to use technology (e.g. email and web browsers).
  • Log in regularly to participate in class - at least 3 times per week. Some students login as much as twice a day.
  • Commit approximately 6 hours per week to a class.
  • Use good time management skills and exercise self-discipline to ensure enough time to study and complete all assignments.
  • Take notes as they study.
  • Enjoy communicating in writing and enjoy reading the writing of others.
  • Seek help when problems arise.
  • Be aware that good communication is an essential element of a Web course. Students must be willing to share thoughts, experiences, and ideas with a group and communicate with others using professional respect and courtesy.
