The Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) is the first statewide coordinating body for college access programs in the nation. Founded in 1999 by the KnowledgeWorks Foundation, the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Department of Education, and the Ohio Business Roundtable; OCAN provides leadership and support to community-based, non-profit Ohio College Access Organizations. OCAN’s primary goal is to help open doors to postsecondary education by providing financial aid and college application advising, last dollar scholarships, college visit opportunities, entrance exam courses, and career guidance. Its method for supporting these objectives is achieved by facilitating the sharing of resources, administering grants, and developing technical assistance programs.

OCAN is closely geared to working with local associations i.e. Transitioning 2 College and Sallie Mae's Education Investment Planner, in order to make certain that its College Access Advisors (CAA) are well informed about college applications and financial aid resources.

CAAs work in local High Schools assisting students with their college pathway which includes some of the following topics: introducing the Postsecondary Option to Education; balancing school and other responsibilities, including the importance of study skills (link best viewed on Internet Explorer, handout may be viewed here); exploring careers; planning for college; applying and registering to college; understanding the cost and paying for college; applying for financial aid and other grants and scholarships; ACT tutoring and Financial Aid Nights for students and parents.

College Access Advisors are currently represented in high schools throughout the five counties served by Southern State Community College. Ultimately, the following values are centralized for the CAA's and OCAN’s work ethic: diversity, opportunity, inclusiveness, community volunteerism, and educational achievement. By increasing awareness of and successful participation in quality postsecondary programs, OCAN desires to provide college access for all Ohioans.
