AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a program networked under the umbrella organization of Americorps after the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. However, VISTA itself was created by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 as a domestic Peace Corps for fighting "The War on Poverty”. Since 1965, more than 140,000 Americans have dedicated themselves to this cause.

VISTA’s are often distinguished by their courage, determination, and heart to develop programs that are crucial for their communities or their respective area of service. A VISTA’s assignment(s) may involve creating access programs for fighting illiteracy, improving health services, producing businesses, increase housing opportunities, bridging the digital divide, and strengthening the capacity of community organizations. Other duties may include handling public relations, planning community meetings, recruiting and training volunteers, seeking out sponsorships, or writing grant proposals.

One of the most notable strengths VISTA members possess is the ability to provide full-time service to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies where a lasting impact can be made. Ultimately, the goal of a VISTA is to bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty by managing human, financial, and material resources.
