GEAR UP, Gaining
Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a
national program launched by the Higher Education Amendments (HEA)
of 1998. It encourages more young people to have high
expectations, stay in school, take challenging courses, and go
to college. GEAR UP services include early awareness, early
assessment of math and writing needs, advanced middle and high
school curriculum, tutoring, mentoring, advising, after-school
programs, summer enrichment programs, last dollar scholarships,
parental involvement, and professional development for teachers.
There are 8 Light House Gear Up Sites in Ohio. West Union High
School was chosen as the Adams County Site.
Through the GEAR UP Grant at West Union, GEAR UP has offered
tutoring once a week in the West Union Jr./Sr. High School
through a program called
B.L.A.S.T. Building Lasting Academic Success Today, (B.L.A.S.T.), provides
students with assistance in math, reading, science, and social
