GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a national program launched by the Higher Education Amendments (HEA) of 1998. It encourages more young people to have high expectations, stay in school, take challenging courses, and go to college. GEAR UP services include early awareness, early assessment of math and writing needs, advanced middle and high school curriculum, tutoring, mentoring, advising, after-school programs, summer enrichment programs, last dollar scholarships, parental involvement, and professional development for teachers.
