Southern State Community Band Spring Concert

The Southern State Community Band will present its annual Spring Concert 3 p.m. Sunday, April 24, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The concert is free and open to the public.

The band will perform a wide variety of music, from popular hit songs, to classics by Mozart, to traditional marches. This year’s Spring Concert will feature guest conductor Jim Williams who previously has served as the band director at both Hillsboro and Fairfield high schools. A special highlight will be a performance by a brass quartet made up of Southern State Community Band members.

The Southern State Community Band was founded in 1998 by Corrine Erickson, a member of the country’s first Women’s Air Force Band, the first U.S. military band to include female members.

Under the direction of Dr. Brian Siemers, an instructor at the college, the Southern State Community Band is open to both students and community members. The Spring Concert is the last of this year’s series, but the SSCB always welcomes new members. Rehearsals will begin again this fall at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium. There are no auditions and all are welcome to participate, including ability levels from beginners to professional musicians.
