Fall Quarter Events at Southern State's South Campus


If it’s a Thursday evening, chances are something cool’s happening at the South Campus of Southern State Community College. From artists and authors to gardeners and (gasp) ghosts, the variety of speakers runs the gamut.

You’re more than welcome to stop by; all events are free of charge and held in the Learning Resources Center on SSCC’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. Call 937-693-0307, ext. 3680, for more info or to verify the tentative schedule below.

Thursday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m.: Journey to Australia with Worldwalker Steve Newman—Journey with Worldwalker Steven Newman as he recounts the many adventurous challenges in his year-long trek across the vast and dangerous deserts of Australia’s Red Center. Filled with folksy humor, gripping drama, mystery and beautiful imagery, this popular program by the veteran lecturer brings to life some of the oddest characters, human and animal, imaginable. Newman’s stories verify Mark Twain’s observation that the world’s oldest continent is “…full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities…”

Thursday, Sept. 29, from 6-8 p.m.: Meet-the-Artist Rachel Hamilton—Taking her late father’s lead behind the camera, photographer Rachel Hamilton maintains the family business, Hazelbaker Photography, as its lead artist. She says her passion for photography was sparked as a young child while watching her father work in his darkroom. Along the way, she honed her own skills by enrolling in a vocational school graphic arts program and college courses in photo editing. She recalls, “With all this new knowledge, I came back and actually taught my father a thing or two!”

Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m.: Louis Charles presents “Helping Ghosts”—Through years of study and field experiments, author Louis Charles reveals his insights and techniques to help hurting, disembodied people cross to the light. Whether you’re a ghost investigator or someone in need of assistance with a haunting, Charles will demonstrate how Helping Ghosts can teach you how to communicate and work with troubled ghosts.

Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6-8 p.m.: Meet-the-Artist Sarah Rose Thatcher—Ten-year-old Sarah Thatcher, a fifth grader at North Adams Elementary School, is a young photographer whose artwork portrays a variety of subjects including flowers, animals, family and friends. Her exhibition at Southern State emerged from the process of working on a 4-H project in photography. “I like taking pictures,” she says. “It is fun and you can save back family memories.”

Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.: It Happened in Ohio—For a small state, Ohio has had a big impact on America. This agricultural, political and industrial power has long been known for the vigor, earnestness and imagination of its citizens. Authors Denvis Earls and Carol Cartaino will delve into “It Happened in Ohio” to go behind the scenes as they tell the state’s story in short episodes, revealing the intriguing people and events that have shaped the Buckeye State.

Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.: Master Gardeners: Houseplants—The Ohio State University Extension program coordinates the Master Gardener Volunteer Program as an outreach service. The program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through the local OSU Extension county offices. The Brown County Master Gardeners regularly visit Southern State’s South Campus to conduct educational workshops and presentations.

Thursday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Personal Finance—Kathy Jelley will offer advice on managing personal finance in two workshops. The 10 a.m. presentation will be geared toward senior citizens, and the 1 p.m. presentation will cover the needs of college students.

Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.: James Willis presents “Weird Ohio”—For his book, which features a collection of spooky, strange and just-plain-weird sites, James Willis traveled across the entire state covering everything from headless motorcycle ghosts and crybaby bridges to the world’s largest cuckoo clock and buildings covered in gum.

Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m.: Musician Steve Free— Hailing from Scioto County, Steve Free is an internationally known singer, songwriter and recording artist who draws upon his Native American and Appalachian roots through songs and stories to educate and entertain audiences of all ages. Free’s music has garnered myriad awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP); the Academy of Independent Recording Artists; Airplay International; and is recognized for his performances on National Public Radio.

Thursday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m.: Master Gardeners: Gardening for all Seasons— The Ohio State University Extension program coordinates the Master Gardener Volunteer Program as an outreach service. The program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through the local OSU Extension county offices. Thursday, Dec. 1, at 12 noon: Jammin’ with the President—The Southern State president, that is. Join bluegrass fan Dr. Kevin Boys as he plucks away at the guitar and mandolin. But don’t forget to bring your strings; audience participation is more than welcome!
