Through the Higher Education Emergency Relief / Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act - Southern State Community College has been awarded $659,789 in additional funds by the U.S. Department of Education to provide emergency grants to assist students with expenses related to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak to continue their education.

Priority Awards

Grant awards were prioritized to students with exceptional need to cover expenses such as tuition and fees, food, housing, healthcare, childcare and other educational expenses related to the coronavirus pandemic. Pell grant eligible students determined by the FAFSA application were considered to be students who had the greatest financial need. An auto award of $500 was made in March of 2021 to students who were attending spring semester. These funds were a direct payment to 457 students by a check mailed from the College's business office to the student's home address to total $229,000.

Emergency Grant Application

The Emergency Grant application will open on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 to students attending Fall Semester 2021.

The SSCC HEERF II / CRSAA Funds Application is currently unavailable.

Grant amounts will be based on application submission and subject to availability of funds. The maximum grant award is $1500.

Examples of emergency financial need or emergency expenses due to COVID-19 pandemic include but are not limited to:

  • Tuition Assistance - grant will be applied directly to student tuition and fee charges for summer semester 2020-21 if authorized on the application.
  • Childcare
  • Medical/Health Care
  • Lab Clinical expenses
  • Lack of Access to Course/Materials - technology
  • Food/Housing
  • Other

All eligible students will be notified by an email to their SSCC email address when the funds have been processed. Please allow a minimum of 5 business days for processing.

Authorization of funds to pay student fees will be paid directly to the student account. All other funds will be mailed directly to the student address on file at the College.

Can I apply for funding more than once?

Yes, students can apply each term, on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to students asking for available funding for the first time. Funding may be distributed each term starting immediately and until Fall 2021, or until funds run out. This will depend on the number of students who apply each term.
