Water/Wastewater Process Applications of Chlorine Dioxide

Description

This six-hour presentation looks at Chlorine Dioxide's potential as the new primary disinfection for the 21st century. We'll explore this disinfectant by 1st comparing the common forms of Chlorine, then we'll look at very basic chemistry to determine why Chlorine Dioxide has terrific potential as a replacement. We'll explore common uses today, some of the key difference/advantages Chlorine Dioxide offers operators when disinfecting our potable waters and treated wastewater effluents. With today's high transportations costs perhaps it's time to look at site-generation of our primary oxidizers. Chlorine Dioxide may prove to be the disinfectant of choice to minimize byproducts, maximize disinfectant residuals, at predictable costs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how Chlorine Dioxide is produced and handled as well as safety, storage, etc.
  • Learn why Chlorine Dioxide reactions in water and wastewaters are so unique - the only Chlorine based oxidizer that does not hydrolyze
  • Explore potential applications in both water and wastewaters for disinfecting as well as minimizing byproducts

Comparing Alternative Disinfection Systems for Water & Wastewater Systems

Description

During this session, attendees will learn about the pros and cons of chlorine (gas, powder, liquid) compared and contrasted against alternatives like Chloramines, Chlorine Dioxide, Ozone, UV, Peracetic Acid, Fenton's Reaction, Ultra-filtration and other disinfectants as well as how they may help in meeting requirements for the disinfection by-products and upcoming groundwater rules. This will be an Interactive program combining superb computer generated visuals, discussion, and demonstrations.

Learning Objectives

  • List the five basic requirements for any primary disinfection system
  • List the common disinfection alternative systems to Chlorine
  • Apply the "Five Basic Disinfection Requirements" to further explore one or more of the alternative disinfection systems
  • Compare and contrast the common alternative disinfection systems to Chlorine
  • Compare and contrast the three common Chlorine compounds used in water/wastewater operations
