Workshops for Water & Wastewater Operators
Ultraviolet Disinfection of Water & Wastewaters
Description
Ultraviolet - Common Sense Disinfection Technology for the 21st Century - This workshop investigates the latest UV disinfection techniques and applications for both potable and wastewaters. Through the use of superb interactive text and graphics, operations personnel explore the advantages of UV systems compared to typical chemical disinfection systems like Chlorine or Ozone. Minimum of 1.5 hours to maximum of 3 hours (one-half day)
Learning Objectives
- Learn why the latest research suggest low-dose UV may be very effective at controlling Giardia and Cryptosporidium in potable waters
- Define and examine what UV is, how it differs versus typical chemical disinfection systems, and understand the advantages and disadvantages
- Review appropriate applications in community and noncommunity potable waters and wastewaters
- Learn why UV may be the low cost choice for installation, operation, and maintenance

Verifying the Water/Wastewater Process
Description
All water/wastewater quality verification used to monitor or process manage our water and wastewater systems are based upon six (6) key methods. This combination interactive lecture reviews these key methods and demonstrates the proper protocol to let operators choose the best method based upon a series of criteria. Gravimetric, Colorimetric, Titrimetric, Turbimetric, Electrometric, and Nephelometric verification/ selection processes are all about choices. The following questions will be addressed and explored: How do I choose the best method? What criteria are used to select the best testing procedures for results reporting and process control? What are my real costs in each method available? What are the regulatory requirements? What about training issues? What are the requirements to verify and confirm these results?
Learning Objectives
- Know and define the six key testing protocol used in applications, management and reporting in the water and wastewater process
- Review these six key test methods to determine which method is best for control and managing that process
- Choose the best method for a specific application based upon specific technical skill, regulatory requirements, verification needs, and real cost factors associated with sampling, reagent handling and disposal
