Special Circumstances

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a means to determine eligibility for federal student aid for every student yet we realize that the FAFSA does not address every family situation. There are cases when students and/or families have a special circumstance that is not taken into consideration on the FAFSA.

The Southern State Financial Aid Office can take into account special circumstances that may affect your need and eligibility for federal student aid. These may include:

  • loss/reduction of employment or income
  • COVID-19 related loss of income, residence and employment
  • unusual medical/dental expenses
  • divorce, separation or death

Your 2021-2022 FAFSA reflects income information from the 2019 calendar year. If you or your family's financial situation has changed from 2019, you may request to have your financial aid eligibility re-evaluated using your 2020 (January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020) or 2021 tax year (January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021), or 2021-22 fiscal year (July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022) income information. The Special Circumstances Appeal form is located on our Financial Aid Forms webpage. Please read over the form and instructions. Submit the completed form and required documentation to the SSCC Financial Aid Office via mail, fax (937-393-6682) or email to financialaid@sscc.edu.

WHO may complete this appeal form? ONLY the parent(s) or stepparent of a student who is defined as "dependent" by the Financial Aid Office AND only if the person(s) completing this form is/are the same person(s) whose information was reported on the student's application for financial aid (FAFSA).

WHEN will this appeal be processed? There is no specific processing time for appeals. Appeals will be reviewed on a first come; first serve basis. However, the Financial Aid Office is working diligently during these difficult times to get students the most assistance available to them as quickly as possible.
