Department: Student Services | Job Title: Academic/Career Advisor
Core job responsibilities:
Guide students in their academic journey
Monitor student progress
Provide support, resources and information to students
How long have you worked at SSCC?
I've been here a minute. I started out as a student in 2012, worked as a peer tutor from 2014-2017, served with AmeriCorp as a college completion coach from 2017 until I became an advisor in 2018.
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind/how many?
I am definitely a dog mom! I have 3 littles, a Chihuahua named Minnie (who is food aggressive and FAR from Mini), a Dachshund named Leia (best cuddler ever) and our newest addition, a rescue Gertie who is a Chiweenie. She is feisty little paper shredder but so stinking cute!
What is the best advice you have been given?
Always be kind. I know it seems like a small thing but it really does matter. We don't know what a person is dealing with and we all have days when we aren't our best so why not be the positive that someone may need. You know you would want the same in return.
What is a part of your job that some people at SSCC may not know that you do?
Many assume that we just work with students long enough to create a schedule but in all honesty, we often become a sounding board, soft place to fall, mentor, and friend. I have students cry in my office, scream in frustration, and sometimes share really personal and heartbreaking situations they are dealing with. They come to us because we have developed a trusting relationship.
